A rare and exceptional figural prestige pipe from the Lobi or Mossi peoples of the Burkina Faso and Northern Ghana border region. The bowl is carved as a compact seated human figure with crossed legs, hands holding an object in the lap — the bowl cavity formed within the figure's abdomen. The face is covered in dense horizontal linear striations consistent with prominent Lobi or Mossi facial scarification traditions, one of the most distinctive identity markers of the region. Fine details include small protruding ears and a carved necklace at the collar. The figure carries a dark ebonized surface developed through smoke, oil, and age. The long wooden stem is fitted with a braided leather wrap and leather thong — a construction consistent with Northern Ghana and broader West African savanna pipe-making traditions. Among the Lobi, figural objects embody spiritual intermediaries known as thil. A pipe of this quality and figural complexity would have been a significant prestige possession, smoked by an elder or chief during council and ceremony.
