Benin Bronze Drummer (Miniature)
Item Information Sheet
Item Name: Benin Kingdom Bronze Drummer Figure
Ethnic Group: Edo (Benin Kingdom)
Country of Origin: Nigeria
About This Piece:
A lost-wax cast bronze figure of a standing court drummer from the Benin Kingdom, Edo State, Nigeria — home to one of the most sophisticated and prolific bronze casting traditions in the world. The figure is rendered with the naturalistic expressiveness characteristic of Benin court art: a smiling face, clothed torso, and a dynamic standing pose with one leg raised, holding a goblet drum at the hip and striking it with a curved beater.
The warm green-brown patina is the result of aged bronze oxidation, and the figure stands on an oval pedestal base.
Musicians and court attendants were a celebrated subject in Benin bronze casting — drummers signaled royal processions, accompanied ceremonies, and held a defined rank within the Oba's court. This figure captures a moment of rhythm, movement, and royal presence frozen in metal.
